What's New?

There are a lot of benefits associated with installing a solar powered attic fan. One of the most important of these is that it can help prevent condensation buildup in your attic. That condensation can lead to rot, mold, or mildew, none of which are problems you ever want to have as a homeowner. Until recently, the most common solution to the problem of preventing the buildup of condensation in one's attic has been the electric attic fan. Either a solar powered fan or an electric fan can keep a flow of fresh air circulating through your attic, but the solar powered fan has several important advantages.

Simple Installation

One of those advantages is the fact that it's really easy to install. With an electric fan, you're going to have to run some wires. Any time you have to run wiring, it's more difficult to make sure your work is up to code. Not only are there no wires to run in the installation of a solar powered attic fan, you won't have to install any downstairs switches or a thermostat, either. You just have to decide where to put it. Obviously, you need to put it where it's going to get as much direct sunlight as possible. The more direct sunlight it gets, the more air it's going to be able to circulate through your attic.

Lower Bills

It's going to lower your electricity bills, too. Because your attic will be properly vented, your home will stay cooler longer. Thus, your air conditioner won't have to work as hard. As you've no doubt experienced, air conditioning can represent a huge chunk of your monthly utility bills. In times like these, every little bit helps, and those savings can really add up. What's more, it isn't just your lower air conditioning usage that's going to result in those lower utility bills. Remember, other types of attic fans use electricity, too! Solar powered fans, on the other hand, just kick on by themselves whenever the sun is out.

Low Maintenance

Once you install one of these fans, you're done. That really is all there is to it. The solar cells from which these fans draw their power can provide your fan with energy for up to fifty years. What's more, the cells can be placed in a different location from the fan itself if that needs to happen. One scenario in which this would be a good idea is if your fan needs to be in a shady spot in order to best circulate air through your attic. If that's the case, you can just put the fan where it's going to do its best job and put the cells in a sunnier spot.

Environmental Friendliness

These fans are environmentally friendly, too. Not only do that not use any electricity themselves, as we've seen, they also reduce the electricity usage in the rest of your home. As a result, your carbon footprint is reduced. When the sun is out, it tends to be hotter, and that is exactly when these fans do their work!

We all know how rough the climate of Orlando is on us. The same goes for your home. An important effort to making your home more efficient against the Orlando climate is a proper installation of attic insulation.

Attic insulation does two things to increase energy efficiency. It keeps warm air in your home from rising into your cold attic in the winter. Warm air naturally rises and without any insulation, you’ll have a hard time keeping your house warm during the cold days in the winter. In the summer, proper insulation helps keep the hot air that fills up your attic from leaking into your home. This can drastically reduce the cost of cooling your home and increase the efficiency of your air conditioning system. The temperature inside your attic can reach up to 160 degrees, and even if a little bit gets into your home, it can drastically effect the cost of cooling the inside of your home.
Proper installation of your Orlando attic insulation is imperative to increasing the efficiency of your home and reducing energy consumption. Any holes or gaps in your insulation will drastically reduce your insulation’s effectiveness.  A proper install of your Orlando attic insulation is crucial in preventing these gaps and leading to leaking.

Batts or blankets can be installed by the homeowner; however their effectiveness is greatly reduced. Batts do offer better insulation than blankets do due to their increased thickness. However, it is difficult to get them into corners and odd spots which limit the complete coverage needed to properly insulate your home.
Blown insulation is recommended for complete coverage and energy efficiency of your home. Blown insulation can be blown into all the corners and crevices of your attic which will lead to greater coverage and limit the amount of gaps that air can escape through. Blown insulation generally costs less than batts or blankets in both raw material and labor costs.

The level of insulation in your attic is measured in R values. An R value is the measure of thermal resistance of an area, and the higher the number the R value is, the better the insulation. The Government has published recommended R values for homes depending on their location and climate. Homes in Orlando are suggested to have an R value between R30-R60. Many contractors think that this is an underestimation, and Orlando homeowners should plan on having a higher thermal resistance to increase efficiency of the home.

It is also important to understand how insulation works to plan for proper planning and installation. Attic insulation works on the same principle of a down sleeping bag. It traps tiny pockets of air that create a barrier against inside and outside temperatures. These pockets of air cannot move freely, thus limiting the thermal transfer of heat. It is important to understand this because, much like a sleeping bag, insulation that has been compressed and de-fluffed will not be as effective.
This is why homeowners of older homes should increase their attic insulation. While they may have had proper insulation when the home was first built, over time their thermal resistance (R value) may have decreased. Also, moisture can compress the attic. It is recommended to check to see if your attic insulation is “fluffy”. If not, it’s time to replace or add more insulation.
